Grand Bahama Island
Grand Bahama Island is the fourth largest of The Islands of The Bahamas. The island is 96 miles long and 17 miles wide with a population of 40,000 people which are spread out over such a wide area as to make the island seem nearly uninhabited in parts. Fabulous white-sandy beaches and relatively affordable prices make Grand Bahama a desirable vacation destination.
As the second most popular tourist destination in The Bahamas, (because of the island’s location just 55 miles from the east coast of Florida) Grand Bahama has been busy developing as a tourist "mecca".
Grand Bahama Island is a unique destination. Everything from shopping, golfing, gambling, beach-going, kayaking, snorkeling, horse-back rides through pine forests and along beaches can be found here. It has one of the world's largest underwater cave systems, three national parks, endless beaches, emerald green water and enchanting marine life. For those not adventure-prone, Freeport/Lucaya boasts Port Lucaya Marketplace and the International Bazaar for shopping and dining.
Among the island’s underwater treasures are the Hawksbill turtle, seahorses, dolphins, Caribbean reef sharks, and dozens of species of both coral and fish.
For nature-lovers there are three national parks on Grand Bahama Island. Lucayan National Park is the only place in the Bahamas where visitors can see all six of the island's ecosystems. The Rand Nature Center is a 100-acre pineland sanctuary located 2 miles east of the center of Freeport. Features of the nature center include native animal displays and an education center. Peterson Cay National Park is one of the smallest National Parks in The Islands of The Bahamas. Shallow bars and coral reefs, especially west of the cay, make for excellent snorkeling and diving.
Freeport-Lucaya
Freeport, capital of Grand Bahama Island, is one of the best-known destinations in the Bahamas. It is hard to beat for things to do, with its hotels, golf courses, and beaches near the town that offer just about every kind of water sport imaginable. Along with diving, windsurfing, parasailing, and other activities, here you can also interact with dolphins.
Freeport people are hospitable and kind, and the atmosphere is bustling with fun activities and plenty of shopping.
As far as tourists are concerned, Port Lucaya is the center of Grand Bahamas. The cruise ships dock here, the activity boats depart from here, and the night life is concentrated here for the most part in the Port Lucaya Marketplace. Several large hotels are also located in Port Lucaya. The Marketplace is perhaps the best shopping center on the island, with about 85 specialty stores and restaurants, not to mention the Straw Market.
Activities
Golf - Championship fairways and greens await golfers. Grand Bahama Island averages seven hours of completely sunny skies per day. Perfect for golfing. The Reef Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. in a contemporary links style. It features a wide-open layout without rows of trees to separate its fairways and lots of water traps. The Lucayan Course is the best-kept and most manicured course on Grand Bahama. Made over after hurricane Jeanne of 2004, this beautiful course is a traditional golf layout with rows of pine trees separating the fairways. With wide target areas off the tee and well-protected elevated greens, it's a great place to enjoy the great game. Fortune Hills Golf & Country Club is a challenging 9-hole course with the longest par 5 in the Bahamas (530 yards).
Diving & Snorkeling - Between the shipwrecks, caves and elaborate coral gardens, Grand Bahama Island has some of the most varied and vivid underwater scenery. Grand Bahama Island is famous for its "blue holes"—amazing azure portals in the reefs through which you can descend, surrounded by reef wall on all sides. One of Grand Bahama Island's extraordinary features is its second largest underwater cave system in the world. You must be certified to dive.
Swim with the Dolphins - Swimmers and scuba divers interacting with dolphins is a special marine experience pioneered at Grand Bahama by the Underwater Explorers Society. You can observe and photograph the dolphins, participate in a swim with the dolphins, sign up for an assistant trainer program or experience scuba diving with the dolphins in open water.
Casino - The Isle of Capri is a Caribbean-themed casino with over 350 slot and video games, 50 video poker machines and 33 table games including black jack, craps, roulette, and mini baccarat.
Water Sports in General - A wide variety of water sports are available on Grand Bahama. These include snorkeling, parasailing, Hobie Cats, banana boats, water-skiing, jet skis, windsurfing, paddle boats and kayaking.
