Bimini Bahamas

Bimini is one of the smallest islands in The Bahamas. The Biminis are a tiny group of islands, consisting of North, South and East Bimini, and Cat Cay, that are rich with history and natural resources. Most of the islands’ population, about 1,600 residents, live in Bailey Town in North Bimini, while the main tourist center is in Alice Town, also on North Bimini. Most of the hotels, restaurants and fishing operations can also be found here.
Alice Town with its bars and hotels is the "commercial centre" of North Bimini, consisting of a single quiet road called the King's Highway, lined with a few small necessity shops, a half dozen local restaurants and an equal number of funky, down home bars. Government offices are located here, in addition to the local Tourist Office, the Hemingway House/The Compleat Angler, Bimini Museum, Straw Market and the ramp where Chalk's Ocean Seaplane lands.
Bimini is known as the big-game fishing capital of the world, and fishing is excellent throughout the year.
Nestled on the border between the Gulf Stream and the Great Bahama Bank, the island and nearby cays provide some of the most sparklingly clear waters as vivid as anywhere in the Caribbean, with underwater visibilities of over 100 feet.
If you go to Bimini, you'll hear a lot of talk about Cat Cay. Cat Cay is a private island owned by its members, whose non-refundable initiation fee is a steep $25,000. Admittance for non-member yachtsmen is restricted to the marina area which includes the Nauticat Restaurant and Lounge, Dockside Bar, Commissary, Boutique and Clinic. The rest of the island, including the golf course, tennis courts, pool and beaches are available for members and their registered guests only. Many wealthy Americans have homes on the island, which has a private airstrip.
South Bimini is the largest area in the Biminis, with a length of four miles and an average width of one mile. There is a large salt water bay, called Cavelle Pond, mangroves and some marshland at the eastern end and, on the bay side, are two lakes - one with fresh sweet water and the other with brackish water. Also in South Bimini you'll find the "Shark Lab" international research center and the legendary "Fountain of Youth".
East Bimini is a narrow wedge on the eastern side of The Biminis. Here you would find secluded beaches, the famous Shark Mound, Bonefish Hole, Healing Hole and several bone-fishing flats, where local guides can help you find the best catches.
Bimini Beaches
Most of Bimini's beaches are found on the west side of North Bimini. The most-popular beach can be found in Alice Town off Queen’s Highway, named Radio Beach. There aren't any commercial water sports operations here, but the sun, sand, swimming and snorkeling are excellent.
Those seeking more privacy will find small but public beaches at some of the guest houses and beach clubs on North Bimini and South Bimini. You can also take a boat out to the Cays off Bimini, these beaches can be hard to reach but they are definitely secluded.
Diving
Bimini offers some of the best scuba diving in The Bahamas. Bimini has magnificent reefs with every kind of sea life imaginable and some of the finest dive spots in the world are found in Bimini. The "Bimini Road" or "Road to Atlantis" was made famous by numerous Discovery Channel specials. The Bimini Barge was rated "one of the ten best wreck dives in The Bahamas and Caribbean” by Skin Diver Magazine.
Boating
Being the closest Bahamian island to the U.S. mainland, Bimini is a natural port of call for boaters in search of fresh cruising waters. The 48 miles can be covered in around 2 hours. -timers might want to cross with one of the popular Bahamas Boating Flings, sponsored by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and the South Florida Marine Industries Association. These flotillas occur throughout the summer months and participation costs around $50.
Dolphin Encounters
Bimini is one of the few places in the world where you can interact with a pod of wild spotted dolphins in their environment and on their terms. Dolphin Excursions take place a few times a week aboard the dive vessels "Destiny" and "Adventurer." Trips are scheduled both in the mornings and afternoons, and can be anywhere from 3 to 4 hours in length. It takes approximately one hour to reach the "dolphin grounds." Sometimes the pod (dolphin family) comes to the boat in as little as 30 minutes; on other days it takes 3 hours. Since 1996, when the program began, the success rate of finding the pod has been over 80 percent. For more information on the Dolphin Excursions go to www.biminiundersea.com/dolphins.htm.
Big Game Fishing
Bimini's main attraction is fishing. With their prime location in the middle of the Gulf Stream, The Bimini Islands offer fishermen the chance to set new fishing records in deep seas filled with marlin, tuna and other game fish. Bottom fishing is also popular here, and large groupers, snappers and wahoo have been caught just minutes off Bimini's shore. There are annual fishing tournaments in Bimini bringing hundreds of fishing boats congregate at the various marinas competing for big prize money.
